The Doppelganger Event: Basically the djinn infiltrated the Country and stole a number of PCs away, leaving copies in their place. During the day the copies were not aware that they were copies, but after sunset the djinn would take over their bodies and wreak havoc. There was no way to tell who was and who was not a djinn in disguise until they revealed themselves, and this thread was between Lan Fan and Ling the first night. The rulers made this information clear, so their paranoia was driving them both a little mad.

The thing about the Xingese, at least those present in the Country at the moment, was that they were always on edge. Years of facing and preventing assassinations that could come at any time from any corner made it so that even when they appeared relaxed they were still hyper aware of the entire room, if not the next two or three.

Given all of this, learning that there were enemies potentially disguised as allies walking among them--or worse yet, that they themselves could be among them? Did not have a good effect. It was even worse than the obstacles they could face in Xing. Yes, it was fully possible for traitors to infiltrate the ranks--but this went far beyond that.

Lan Fan had fallen back from the more open routine she had slowly been developing, stubbornly dawning her armor again with the threat of battle looming. Their dinner was eaten in near silence as dusk approached, eying each other the way one would a potential threat.

Because both of them were potential threats...

Ling picked up his dishes, ready to take them to the bucket of water they used to clean their things. "I suppose I haven't much of an appetite," he announced, trying to sound bright and carefree. The smile on his face was tight and drawn. "Thanks, it's very good meat, Lan Fan. I just... don't feel very hungry right now."

Ling looked over at her and eyed her plate as well. "Finished?" he asked, ready to collect her dishes and wash them.

Lan Fan could recognize the prince's act from a mile away. It served as nothing more than an attempt at normalcy for her. She knew in an instance like this the more he smiled the less at ease he was.

She nodded curtly in regards to her own uneaten food--another sure sign that all was not well. She lifted the dishes in question and offered them to him, her guard up too far to attempt any protest to his doing the labor. Her attention was on the fading light and the warning that they would show their true colors when night fell. For the umpteenth time she took stock of where her weapons were hidden inside her clothing, the location of the obstacles in the room if they needed to be avoided or used as weapons themselves, the exact positioning of the exits...

... and the concept of potentially needing to fight against the face she was sworn to protect to her own death.

No. She didn't have much of an appetite either.

Lan Fan was going to just let him wash her dishes?

Ling's blood ran ice cold and he felt the hair on the back of his neck stand straight up. This didn't seem like Lan Fan. She'd failed his first litmus test. She should have protested in her pretty alto, with her dark eyes worried and her lower lip pinched stubbornly. She should tried to take the plate herself and beat him to the work.

The sun outside his window had slipped below the silhouettes of the city's dome and battlements and turrets, but the sky was still bathed in rose and scarlet fire. He hadn't thought a change would happen until it was fully dark. But perhaps, he surmised, "night" could refer to any time in which the sun wasn't up. Which would be now...

Still, Ling had to keep up appearances. He couldn't let on that he suspected-- he'd give himself away before he got an advantage. Without missing a beat he smiled and shuffled off to the washing bucket. He even whistled a little tune-- the song he'd danced to her with at the recent festival.

"Lan Fan," he said, happily. "Do you remember when we were in the square when the villagers here were having that big party for us? With the music and the rose petals and all that food. That sure was fun, huh."

At the bucket, he was positioned facing a corner with no reflective surfaces to see her by. She had him in a blind spot, if she was waiting for a chance to attack, now was a great time. Ling picked up a washcloth and scrubbed some powdered soap over the dishes. His back to her, his open eyes shifted to the right side, watching the side he guessed she'd attack from warily. "What did you like the most about it?"

Later she would berate herself for the slip up and for becoming too lax in his wishes to experience things as a commoner, the thought that he was using the action as a test had not occurred to her. Her own test was based purely on if and when he attached. Or when she attacked. The thought that she could be one of them hadn't left her--and if she was... would she simply cease existing in her own body? She didn't know.

Her flesh hand fisted against her thigh as he put his back to her. Why was he leaving himself open if she had that potential to turn. It was foolish--they each knew what the other was capable of... Or was he trying to trap her? To get her to let her guard down by opening himself up...

Lan Fan swallowed, that melody bringing the memories of the day back before he'd even spoken of it. Despite it all she still felt color hit her cheeks--and of all the times. She couldn't let herself be distracted by those thoughts. Was that the goal? To confuse and distract her and force an opening?

"Yes, my prince," she answered, refusing to allow any hesitance into her voice. If the goal was to throw her off balance she couldn't let it be heard, even if it would be seen on her face as always. Still, she faltered in answering his question, the normal debate on the 'proper' answer only worsened by her nerves. "The food, certainly," she finally answered, even if that wasn't the truth. But she couldn't very well admit the truth--to herself or to him, and certainly not right now. Not when the thought of his real smile would make her hesitate to defend herself... or land any blow much less a killing blow if that was what it came to.

Ling's heart fluttered and sunk just a tiny bit in his chest, hearing her answer that she'd certainly liked the food best. It might not even be the real Lan Fan, but either way it was hard to hear her voice say so. Bashful, he peeked over his shoulder at her as he wiped a dish with a cloth. "The food was very good," he agreed, his voice a just touch quieter but his pleasant smile still cemented onto his face. "It's true."

He went quiet again, turning back to the dish. He figured it was clean enough? Maybe? Ling rinsed it with the water from the bucket they were using for rinsing, his lips pressed together in concentration at the unfamiliar and awkward task.

There was that line he was toeing, yet again. Should he tell her what he'd liked best? Or was it wholly inappropriate and presumptuous? He glanced back at her, wondering. Would it be too much?

Lan Fan had not moved a hair from where she was kneeling, her hands fisted loosely against the tops of her thighs. Her attention was divided between the light, or lack thereof, outside and him. How long would it take if one of them was going to lose themselves? 'Night' seemed such a vague answer now that it was approaching... or here. Her own chi seemed normal--as did his. There was no hint of anything amiss, no sick energy signature as Envy had.

It seemed only to be them as always.

She felt him look toward her, but she did not meet his gaze, keeping her head bowed slightly as she continued to judge the situation as the seconds slowly ticked by. Her eyes turned toward him, watching his feet from the corners of them even if she didn't turn her head.

Should she be ashamed for being so suspicious of her own prince? Surely she should. And yet if he turned out to be an imposter and she had not realized...

Her stomach twisted uncomfortably, not breaking the silence.

Ling wiped the two plates and the chopsticks with a dry towel and placed them on the shelf. "The food was good, but you know what? That hadn't been my favorite," he remarked as he strolled back to the center of the room, his eyes on the window to appear nonchalant. Perhaps by speaking more to her, he could get more clues to see if this was really Lan Fan or not. "Not remotely. Do you... know what was?"

Ling took a step in her direction. His eyes went to the floor, gauging the distance between her feet and his. He took a breath, as if testing the air, and then lifted his gaze to meet hers, scanning her carefully for any signs that this wasn't the real her. Lan Fan tried to suppress her chi as much as she could, trying to hide any hint of her sudden spike of nerves as he turned to her both in her energy and on her face and in her posture. But she couldn't hide it all. At his words her eyes widened by a hair, her flesh hand twitching ever so slightly...

And then that damnable blush rose for which the only plausible control for was to hide behind her mask rose on her face along with two stark thoughts that warred fiercely in her mind. First, that he had said those words and so boldly, followed up by her own confused and treacherous thoughts.

Would he ever say something so bold... to her? Oh she had seen him flirt openly with others, but there wasn't much merit in that play-acting of his, a flirty playful mask was still a mask. But it wasn't the same between them it wasn't...

He knew it wasn't. He had to. He had to know that such thoughts or suggestions would throw her off balance, leave her guard down. This was striking her at her most vulnerable spot and she knew he would not bat around the bush, if he meant to strike he would strike. 'If you want to shoot the general first aim for his horse'...

She couldn't let herself be flustered. It was a trick--wasn't it?

"Young master..." she breathed, her voice so controlled that it wasn't clear if it was a statement or a question. She felt like a spring-loaded trap, her muscles slowly coiling tighter and preparing to react at any moment.

Ling moved closer. If this wasn't really Lan Fan, she'd out herself any moment. This blush was convincing, yes, but it was somehow different in feeling that Lan Fan's blushes he'd known up until now-- or was it? Perhaps it was the maturation she'd undergone between their world and this. Maybe it was looking different because of the newly mature shape of her cheekbones and chin, perhaps, or the fact that with the bit of height he'd gained, he was seeing her from a different angle.

When had it been that they'd only been fourteen or fifteen and she'd been such a child, hemming and hawing silently, murmuring behind her mask when he asked her questions? It seemed like forever ago, now.

Fake Lan Fan or real Lan Fan, she certainly wasn't a child anymore. Her face was different, her body having grown a bit to offset any feeling of immaturity she'd had before, with her limbs a bit too short for her movements. Her legs and arms balanced her now, her hips had filled out so that they grounded her weight differently than before. Ling could tell that her bindings had more inside them, too. He was sure that she had a more graceful shape to her altogether.

Before Ling realized quite what he was doing, he was standing right before her, admiring her features openly. His eyes were focused on her flushing cheeks. Lan Fan's had always been high, smooth and pale as the moon. All of the training she did outside did nothing to darken them. It was a mark of beauty that Xingese courtesans like his mother used all kinds of concoctions and scrubs to achieve. And here Lan Fan only washed with bucket water and a bit of grimy soap, he thought with an inward chuckle.

It felt as though Ling's gaze was burning her. It was rare that they held the other's gaze so directly and for so long. And he had never looked at her like that... never with that degree of intensity. She wanted nothing more than to look away--this wasn't right. He would not look at her in this way--She wasn't a woman. She wasn't a man. She was caught somewhere hopelessly in-between--she was a retainer. He knew that. He respected that. There were lines they would never cross (or had they begun to cross them already? The hiss from the back of her mind caused the color in her face to rise even more). No! They both knew their place. And he would never--and she would never--

No. He wouldn't look at her this way. Especially not under these circumstances--and that was exactly why she couldn't lower her gaze. She needed to watch him. Any moment now he would make his move--but until then she would wait... and continue to mask her own reactions. She would not give him anything to read but a blank slate.

"Lan Fan," Ling breathed, quiet in the stillness of their dusty little room. What if this wasn't the real Lan Fan? If it wasn't the real one...

All kinds of odd thoughts began rising in his tired brain. Ling considered himself great at keeping so controlled. But night after night of sleeping with a dirty plaster wall and a simple curtain between himself and this girl... with her dark, curious eyes, her quiet strength, and her silent steps. Her tiny mouth, and her slightly sweet smell. Her strange ways that he didn't understand.

"Lan Fan, I'm tired," he admitted ever so softly. "Worn out." It was true. Ling had been trying hard to suck it up and be the man of their outfit and keep everyone together, solve each problem without handling his own burdens. It was increasingly leaving him feeling like a fraying rope.

Ling raised his hand. Maybe, if this was a fake Lan Fan, he should allow himself a tiny, very brief moment's fantasy, before he had to fight her.

He didn't plan to really actually touch her-- he wouldn't dare. But wistfully, he turned his palm and fingers to face himself and moved his hand a few inches from her face. His eyes fell closed most of the way. The backs of his fingers slowly traced the edge of the warm chi that he could feel radiating from her blush.

And there--his words and his tone... Damn it all, it was pulling the right strings. Lan Fan hesitated, her posture going beyond ready to rigid. As much as seeing his expression open and warm--to see it open and... whatever this was... It was also something she wanted, for him to let that mask go while in front of her--but could an imposter know that? Did he know that at all? Could he?

Her fingers clenched against her thighs, her eyes widening as his hand moved not in an attack but what would appear a caress, falling just short of touching her face. What was this!?

And finally she broke just a hair, stopping short of knocking his hand away and instead hissing, her tone betraying her uncertainty, "What are you doing?"

"What am I doing?" he repeated, taking the moment to gauge her speech and movements.
What was he doing, indeed!

"Testing you, of course!" Ling lied outright, his defenses slamming shut again. For a reason he couldn't fathom, he was more afraid of having his weak thoughts found out than he was of the very real possibility of being stabbed. A stab he could block, or at the very least, bandage. Information, once out, could never come back.

He straightened again, slid his left foot back in case she jumped up and tried to attack him. "Trying to feel your chi for irregularities." He threw in a scoff for good measure. "What did you think I was doing."

Testing her...

She almost sighed with relief as he straightened and drew his hand back, even if it was coupled with him subtly taking a defensive position.

He was testing her. And who was it then? Was it really Ling, trying to draw an imposter to react--or the fake trying to do the same? She still couldn't tell! How would it work? Would they still be recognizable, or would it be obvious? The light, while fading, had still not gone. It still wasn't clear if it had actually begun.

Lan Fan's expression softened ever so slightly, her brows twitching as they wanted to draw together, her lips pressing to a thin line. He did not need to reach for her to feel her chi. And in response she reached out even more with her own, trying desperately to note any change at all in his--to find absolutely nothing. As far as she could tell he was the same Ling he had been any other day...

"I do not know," she lied in return. After all... if this was turned out to really be Ling... she couldn't admit that she thought he was going to touch her in such a manner...

Even if there was a deep buried part of her that would welcome it.

"If you're the real Lan Fan, that's most likely what you'd say," he replied, patiently. "So it must be you." Anyone else would know exactly what he had been doing, and call him on it.

Ling put the offending hand inside his pocket, savoring the close, warm tingle he'd been able to feel from her by putting his hand so close to her skin. It was different than sensing her chi from far away. A person's voice heard from across a room was quite different when hearing it whispered in the ear.

Giddy with having had such a close and intimate second or two of contact, Ling turned on his heel, hoping to remember the sensation in his hand for weeks to come, even if he lost his chi-sense yet again.

Lan Fan couldn't help releasing the breath she had been holding, finally letting the tenseness in her posture release as he turned his back on her again--this time satisfied that it was really him and not an imposter.

A fake wouldn't have stopped...

Her shoulders drooped, bowing her head a bit and letting her fingers uncurl against her thighs before briefly lifting her flesh hand to brush the backs of her fingers against her cheek where his own had come so near while his back was to her. "That they would cause us to nearly turn on each other..." she made a bitter 'keh' before going silent again, lowering her hand and biting back the urge to apologize for the fact that she had been unsure of him.

That had been a two way street, clearly...

Ling nodded, moving to the window. "We should make sure others are safe," he said quietly. His expression was stern as he looked down from the window on the nighttime street. "We need the favor badly, to fix your arm and Ed's limbs. Let's split up to cover more ground. If you need assistance, use a flare to alert me."

Ling felt his chest tighten painfully at asking her to leave his side, but the fact was that if he stayed close to her, he wasn't sure he could trust himself. The fact that her automail was not working well was a two-edged sword-- he was worried about letting her go, but if watching her, he was likely to treat her as less than the capable warrior she was.

Lan Fan's lips pressed even more tightly at the notion of leaving him alone at a time like this. She agreed with all points but the last... but she couldn't bring herself to argue with him about it.

She lifted her hands to the cord of her mask where hung at her back from her neck and pulled it to the front, raising it and tying it properly in place, drawing her hood up over her head a moment later as well. She shifted where she was, drawing one knew up so that she was in a proper bow for receiving orders.

"Be careful," he managed, barely able to keep his emotions under wraps. His sword was on his bed, and he picked it up without meeting her gaze, buckled it on. "Let's reconvene here in three hours. If you don't come, I'll come looking for you."

With that he hurried out the window and away to the east. If he let her leave first and saw which way she was going, he'd be too tempted to tail her and make sure nothing happened to her. This wasn't a workable situation, was it? Wanting her to succeed and be safe at the same time, how was it possible?

For the first time, Ling started to wonder if it had actually been for a very good reason that his elders had advised him not to develop anything more than a pleasant working relationship with his bodyguards...

She watched him go before exiting through the doorway and springing up to the rooftops and off in the opposite direction, suppressing her chi while simultaneously feeling for the dragon's pulse and anything... off.

The Favor Credit Debacle: Basically, in CWP characters could make purchases on "favor credit" if they did not have the funds for something, and so long as they earned the favor somehow within a specified time there was no down side, but if they did not generally they would be hit with very steep interest in the form of a curse of some kind. Lan Fan arrived in CWP with her automail damaged and Ling decided to go behind her back to earn the favor to pay for her automail repairs, asking Ed to help him. Unfortunately they did not understand how this worked (or rather we as players didn't understand... oops) and after they had earned the favor needed (2000 to be exact) they discovered upon going to get and pay for the repairs that they the credit needed to be earned AFTERWARD, at which point Lan Fan discovered what Ling had done. This occurred when Lan Fan and Ling were at about the height of their UST in the game before finally tossing propriety out the window.

WHO: Ling, Ed, Lan Fan, possibly Winry too?
WHAT: Ling and Ed saved up favor to pay for Ed and Lan Fan's automail repair-- wait, Mister, what do you mean that's not how it works?
WHEN: June 20th afternoon?
WHERE: machinery repair shop in Favor's Own
WARNINGS: lots of angry swearing

Ling was dumbfounded as the cashier handed him a piece of parchment with a hastily written receipt for the automail repair on it. The man had clearly explained that the favor he and Edward had worked so very hard to get could not be used for the transaction, then quickly disappeared into his workshop, leaving the three travelers alone in the dusty, oil-scented lobby.

"Wait," he said weakly, but it was too late. He could feel Lan Fan and Ed looking at him from behind, almost as if their gaze was burning holes into the back of his shirt. He was afraid to turn around, to say the least. He swallowed and pivoted slowly, eyes squinched shut to hide what he was feeling right now.

"Well," he said, trying to sound as if nothing at all was wrong. He didn't want to make Lan Fan feel guilty, after all, that he'd worked to pay for her repair. "That's that."

For once, Ed was at a loss for words. All the Favor he'd earned, putting himself in situations that were very much outside of his comfort zone (or what he had previously perceived as his comfort zone) and it came to nothing? No, not just nothing, it was worse than nothing. It wasn't so much the fact he was going to have to earn that Favor all over again (because if he was forced to admit it, he was starting to kindofsortof like this whole sex thing), it was the fact he could have had his automail back this entire time.

That, that was why he was glaring daggers at Ling.

"'That's that?'" he finally spat out.

Lan Fan had barely been able to look at either of them the entire day--Ed... because of that hideously vivid dream that refused to fade properly from her mind... and Ling for much the same reason.

But this? This had snapped her out of it. Ling had lead her out here with the intent to have her arm repaired. When she questioned the method of payment he had dismissed her (and she knew for an absolute fact that they did not have the funds between the two of them to even scratch the surface of what a repair would cost.

Favor credit. He had planned to pay for it with favor.

She stood rooted where she was. Oh, Ling didn't need to worry about her feeling guilty. Oh no. She was furious, feeling white hot anger pricking up and down her spine at the implication, but somehow she managed to hold herself in check, standing with her fists clenched and her eyes focused on the ground just in front of her.

Ling looked at the two of them, careful to keep his face completely blank. "You heard the man," he said to Edward. "We're going to have to pay with favor acquired from here on out."

He cleared his throat, and rocked back on his heels once. Ed had better watch his words in front of Lan Fan, or Ling would have to pound the shit out of him.

Lan Fan's hand twitched once before returning to a tight fist. She was about to shame herself irreparably. She was about to dishonor her entire line. She had to keep her temper reigned in--and yet as the seconds ticked by and their words registered to her--

"You said not to concern myself... with the payment," she said, her voice low and subtly shaking. "But you are surprised by what has been said..." That fire pricked down her spine and needled below her skin. "Why?" She boldly looked directly at Ling, her eyes shining with anger. She had the suspicion already. She hadn't questioned the fact that she hadn't seen his brand for weeks. His hands were constantly bandaged because of the blisters caused from his work.

But now she was sure that it would be a bright gold color instead of the dark coffee color it had been the last time she saw it.

"Exactly that, Edward, it is indeed a really bizarre way of doing things and I'm quite fed up with it at this point," Ling agreed, with a grumble. "At the very least they could explain it clearly to foreigners ahead of time."

Now Ling turned to Lan Fan, his shoulders less tight and his face nonchalant. "I'm surprised by what has been said because I thought that we had to get favor ahead of time to pay, just like with regular money," Ling said blankly to Lan Fan. "Whoever heard of a system where you can get what you want without payment beforehand? And yes, you shouldn't concern yourself with the payment."

Luckily for Ed, Lan Fan's attention was solely on Ling for the moment, his words doing nothing to calm her. And he had no reason to calm her. She was his retainer. She was his servant. She was supposed to accept whatever he said as law and that was that.

"So you earned the favor already," it was a statement, not a question. "With the intention of paying for these repairs."

She was shaking lightly for how tightly she was holding herself in place. She could barely follow what emotions were going through her--but insult and jealousy were certainly there, all wrapped up in blazing anger--and once that anger dissipated there would certainly be the proper shame and guilt she perhaps should have felt first and more for how she was acting then.

Ling's face was more than a bit embarrassed. But he nodded once, simply. There wasn't anything he could think of that would be better than simply telling her the truth, right now. "Yes. I have," he said evenly, allowing his eyes to make contact with hers if she wished to look into them for lies. He wasn't completely sure why she seemed so angry about it-- he'd expected much more of a scandalized blush and gasp behind the hand reaction.

"Our first day here... you forbid me... from doing any such thing... and then you turned around and did it yourself!?"

And then Edward finally caught her attention and her gaze snapped to him, the look in her eyes enough to almost burn a person's skin off. "You knew about this?" she hissed. Of course she logically knew Ed was under no obligation to repeat anything like this to her. She'd seen his brand weeks ago and the lighter color it had taken on, she knew he had been participating in something as well.

She just didn't realize it was with each other. Yet.

Ling blinked, taken aback. "Of course I did it myself," he said, because to him it was obvious that he was the one who should have done it. It didn't show through his mask-like expression, but he was feeling uneasy about how to speak about it, especially to Lan Fan-- they never discussed such things. And he didn't want to just announce anything for Edward, that seemed like betraying a confidence.

"I asked someone I could trust to help me get the favor for you," he explained, deciding to phrase it that way-- and if Ed wanted to let just whom that had been loose, that was still up to him. "I earned enough to pay for the repairs and then some."

Ed almost felt like taking a step back from the glare Lan Fan shot his way. It'd been a while since he'd seen her this angry, since she usually kept her emotions in check.

"Yes, I knew about it," he finally replied. "It's how I decided to pay for my repairs." It wasn't quite admitting he'd been involving himself with Ling... not quite.

"Why wasn’t I told about any of this?" her eyes moved back and forth between them, the intensity not leaving her gaze, and perhaps only heightening. Of course she ultimately knew what the answer was and it only made her blood boil more. She thought that of all people, Ling could look past her gender. Ling respected her for her skills, for who she was, for what she could do despite being a woman—and yet he had hidden this from her and she was certain it was because she was a woman.

"Why was I not given the choice of earning the favor myself?" she took a single angry step forward. "Both of you respect me so little!?"

The last time she had started to react emotionally to something like this Ling had rounded on her with words that had shocked her completely out of her outrage. This time both of them just seemed to be fanning the fire. Lan Fan would be mortified at her own behavior once she was able to calm down--but for the moment her temper had simply run away with her.

Her attention snapped back to Ed, "Then why?"

Ling looked down at her, stern. Did she really want to discuss this in front of Ed? Fine, so be it.

"The reason why is because I know the way you are, Lan Fan. If you felt your duty required it, you'd sacrifice anything-- even your purity. You're so humble that you're given to thinking of yourself as expendable." He frowned, unhappy at thinking of the distorted self-image she seemed to have, likely from training as a bodyguard. Ling wasn't aware of what sort of training Yao bodyguards received, but he didn't like the feeling he got about it from observing her.

"Even if you didn't find--" god this was so awkward to discuss with her-- "the act enjoyable at all, I could imagine you forcing yourself to be intimate with some strange person. Because you wanted to fix your arm to protect me. Do you deny it?"

"I do not," she answered, though the heat had not left her voice. She straightened to her full height. "That is my duty. And I am proud of it. And I will live and die by it, the same as my father and my grandfather. I earned this station. I should be treated the same as any other retainer--and you would not have done this were I a man."

Ling folded his arms, his tone quite calm as he continued. "I would so have. Because man or woman, Lan Fan is Lan Fan. I know you, and I know you'd not think it worth spending a grain of rice just to stop the awful pain it's giving you," he pointed out. "You want to fix it for my sake."

"And if it's ultimately for my sake that your automail should be fixed, then it only makes sense for me to pay the price," Ling said. "Your arm is now automail, as well as broken because of me. If I sat idly by and allowed you to pay for it I'd be a selfish piece of scum, just another garbage prince who uses people."

He regarded her solemnly, his words quiet but firm. "Of all people I know, you're the one who knows the most about responsibilities, Lan Fan. Surely you can see that in this instance, that lies with me."

Lan Fan couldn’t let it go. Even if their words were true, she could not believe that she wasn’t receiving special treatment. The fact that Ling had put emphasis on her virginity in regards to any sacrifice she might make all but screamed it. It wouldn’t matter for a man, not in the same way. Not to the point that she wouldn’t have been included in the plan. She turned her eyes down again, but she still wasn’t calmed, only momentarily silenced, caught between the logic of Ling’s words and the underlying truth that she just didn’t believe that he could see. Of course he was still right. She was stubborn. And had she known the plan she would have done exactly as he had said but for a direct order not to.

At Ed’s words a distinct flare of jealousy flashed through her and her head jerked up, eyes slightly wide as she watched him. Ling had asked Ed? Her brows drew again and the information just made her insides coil. Oh, she could recognize the jealousy, was ashamed that it was there, but there was no beating it back. In fact, it only made her suspicion of being given special treatment worse, considering it was the two men involved.

She looked away from Ed with an angry huff, eyes down and looking away, still very clearly angry. “And now what? Do you expect me to sit back and do nothing when this favor needs to be earned all over again?” her voice was dripping with frustration and jealousy. And after Ling had spoke of her addressing her needs even. Ha! No wonder he said that Ed would help her. She just boiled on the inside. It was one legitimate reason to overstep those lines she refused to cross—and yet she would be denied ultimately for the same reasons she wouldn’t cross them on her own in the first place.

She wanted to scream. She wanted to beat something. Or someone. She wanted—a;lkgja;sldkgjalskjg;askd

"Lan Fan, you may do as you want! I just-- didn't want you to be having--" Gah! Could he really say this to her?! Ling swallowed and his voice dropped to a hissed half-whisper. "To be having sex out of financial obligation!"

His face was flushing. "You're special, you're not-- I wouldn't ever ask you to have sex for money! You don't even like people to see your face. You hate being touched. You can't stand me. You don't even like to sit in the same room with me," Ling dealt a sharp elbow to his friend. "Hurry, Ed, say something before I say too much and humiliate myself right here," he blurted out.

And then they both fell back to gibbering messes again.

Lan Fan looked up, frustration and irritation still showing quite plainly on her face. Ling's first words were completely accurate. She didn't like being seen. She didn't like being touched... or at least she thought she didn't like being touched... But Ling thought she couldn't stand him? That she didn't want to be in the room with him--was he really so completely oblivious?

She bit back another snort. She wasn't sure what was happening here, and she was finally becoming aware of how... public this all was. Damn her temper.

"I want to pay for half," she said firmly. It was a point of pride now. "It is still my arm."

"You... may do as you want, just-- if you are doing things, I request that you do so only if you want to. Not out of obligation," Ling managed, but the truth was he was biting back a yell and a command or two. He knew, however, that he was being too greedy by wanting to say no. "You aren't to sell yourself, you're Lan Fan, and you're important to... us," he finished.

"I only want you to... do what makes you happy, not agree to things you aren't enjoying just because you feel you must," Ling explained slowly, and then he had to trail off. His eyes went to his shoes and stayed there. There was an old adage suited to this situation, wasn't there? The one about letting your bird go, and if it cares for you, the way you do for it...

Lan Fan didn't know what she was signing up for, certainly. The declaration and her stubborn stance was all fueled out of headstrong anger and frustration without regard to her own personal boundaries.

Because quite frankly, the only person she wanted to do any such things with was the one person with whom she really could not. And the one with whom she was still rather furious with. Oh, the irony.

But she was still in the middle of the train wreck now and still surging without really thinking or understanding specifically how the favor credit would work--or specifically the curses involved for... late payment.

"Then we should call him back out to draw up the contract."

She wasn't going to respond to the oddities in his wording. They were too confusing... and lay far to close to things she was better off not touching in waking hours.

"Very well," Ling murmured, and he shuffled away, eyes on the floor and the confidence gone from his steps. He stuck his head behind the curtain to call for the man, and when he didn't get a response, he ducked under the curtain to go talk to him. His humiliation seemed to follow him like a little cloud around his person, he could sense it there.

Lan Fan was going to try to make money to "restore his fortunes" or some stupid thing like that! He could just see it now, she'd go crazy and let people use her and not care because she'd say that it was for the sake of the Yao clan, or some twisted garbage like that. Ling just knew it!

Lan Fan's own confidence waned just a bit as Ling stepped exited, taking a shaky breath before letting it out slowly. She raised her eyes again and leveled them on Ed, and that jealousy spiked in her all over again. A large part of her wanted to demand what they had done. If he'd liked it. "That has nothing to do with it," she snapped back. Because that had everything to do with it, of course. Because he shouldn't care so much for a retainer, he shouldn't put a retainer before himself, it defeated the purpose of having a retainer in the first place--but god help her she wanted him to care. She wanted that attention.

But she wanted that attention directed at her, not shielded from her and redirected at Edward fucking Elric. "And what do you know of it? You know nothing of the inner workings of Xing--you know nothing of what is at stake here."

That urge to rip something apart was rising again--and unfortunately for Ed she wasn't duty-bound to protect him from harm.

Her mind was a mess, all of those layers of conflict mixed up together so that she couldn't tell which way was up and all she was left with was the uncertain confusion--that just made her angry. The right thing to do was different at each level. What she wanted to do was different at each level. And it all ended with her words and actions contradicting each other.

As a retainer she should have been the one protecting Ling in this situation. As a subordinate she should have accepted the choice by her liege and accepted the gift as what it was. As a Xingese woman she should have done the same and have been grateful that he placed such importance on her purity. But as the woman who had fought tooth and nail her entire life to be respected in a man's role she was still insulted in the special treatment.

But as Lan Fan, forever caught between roles to be seen as neither a woman or a man--as Lan Fan who was becoming well aware of her forbidden love of her own prince--she was hurt. She was angry. She was jealous. And there was no right action because the fact that she had those feelings at all was wrong in and of itself.

And he wanted to know why.

She had crossed the sparse distance between them in an instant, forgoing any answer other than with her fist.

And, in fact, it was taking just about everything she had not to take a second swing. "Do not dare to speak down to me in matters you don't understand--"

And she lost that battle in holding back, swinging her left leg out in a vicious kick aimed at his side. Because frankly if she didn't do something to distract herself she ran the risk of the sting at the back of her eyes becoming something more substantial.

Lan Fan nodded, trying to focus on the fact that this meant she would be relieved of the vast majority of the pain her shoulder caused her--even if it would do nothing for what had made her so angry to begin with.

A thread with CWP!Greed during an event where peoples' senses were in overdrive. Greed's sense of taste was affected so that he was constantly hungry, Lan Fan's sense of touch was. In addition, this was roughly a week after Lan Fan's automail repairs, and as she had signed up for more than she bargained for there in regards to gaining favor she was cursed with something we dubbed "sexual tourettes" in which she would randomly spout off sexual thoughts or comments without being able to stop it--or even know when it was coming for that matter.

WHO: Greed and YOU
WHAT: Incense curse! Greed's sense is taste and he can't stop eating.
WHEN: July 10th
WHERE: The Market of Favor's Own
WARNINGS: NSFW, if you so choose.

It's another hot day and Greed flops down on a bench, dressed in the local garb of a plain white kurta and pants. Due to the weather he's had to forgo his signature all leather outfit, with the exception of his shoes and bracelets. As much as he hates to wear something so plain, he is thankful that it's so light. How does anyone live in such hot weather?

Greed only gives the thought brief attention before opening up a brown paper bag. Inside is a variety of food, ranging from meat to pastries and everything in between. He checks over his shoulder to see if anyone's around before pulling out a large hunk of bread and shoving it into his mouth. He's just been so hungry lately and today it's even worse. Everything he eats just seems to make him hungrier. Is this what Gluttony feels all the time? Greed's already half way through the bag and he's not even slightly full. Nearly 2 golds worth of food and it means nothing.

Greed groans and shakes his head. This place is awful.

For two solid days something seemed to be wrong with her skin. Every inch of her seemed to be over-sensitive, making her painfully aware of every thread of the cloth than hung from her body, every fold and crease, the loose areas and the way they would sway and cling and occasionally waft air up through them. And of heat that her automail absorbed, and the grit of the sand that found its way into her shoes, the beads of sweat that would gather on her skin and the way they would trickle down her back and chest below her clothing. It was maddening.

She almost wished that the hypersensitivity was resulting with pain, but of course that wasn't the issue--not in this place. Any simple brush against her, any small breeze catching her hair or clothes, any form of touch at all sent shivers down her spine--and she would have needed to be made of stone for her mind not to drift to what more deliberate touches would feel like.

Despite it all, she had ventured into the market, determined to hide the new found sensitivity the same way she would hide an injury--and also just as determined not to give in to those thoughts. She caught sight of Greed as she was making her way there, catching his groan just as she was coming up on him.

"What's wrong?" she asked, stopping a foot or two away. She wasn't entirely sure why she was asking.

"Just hungry all the time," Greed sighs. His life is so hard. "You and your little prince are the same way, right? How do you fix it?"

He looks down at his bag of food and shakes his head. "What a waste of money..."

Lan Fan stares back, one brow raising. The question seemed admittedly silly. "We eat," she answered simply. "Or endure it when there isn't enough food." She stepped closer, reaching out to grab the edge of the bag and look at what he was eating.

"I do not want to eat it, I want to see what it is," she groused, saddling him with a flat look. (Of course that wasn't entirely true, she would totally eat his food any day of the week.) She pointed at the bread she was able to get a glimpse of. "Rice is much less expensive than bread here. You can get much more for the same amount. It seems more filling as well." Or at least it did to her.

Clearly Greed would fit right in with she and Ling at the table--a person was liable to loose a limb in there. She raised a brow at him, "You just said you were always hungry and that it was a waste of money."

Wait. Was she actually trying to suggest practicality to him? Losing battle here, Lan Fan.

She sighed, visibly flinching as her kurta dragged against her back in a way she couldn't ignore as she took her arm back. This was absolutely ridiculous...

"I don't know what to tell you," she answered bluntly, fighting the urge to reach behind her to pull at the fabric that kept catching her the wrong way.

Lan Fan scowled a bit at the statement. "It is your body," she said flatly. And then considered it further. "How long has it been like this? Since you arrived, or is it a... recent occurrence?"

"I have something you can taste--" Lan Fan freezes up with a grimace. Still cursed, obviously--but with the near constant display of it she was slowly reacting less and less to the colorful statements that made their way out of her mouth, opting generally to ignore them and continue on with the proper conversation a moment later. Like now.

"Recently as in the past two or three days?" she continued, her face coloring despite how nonchalant she acted--especially as the utterance sparked a train of thought where her current affliction was concerned.

Greed raises his brows at that. Was she offering food, or just being dirty? He's more inclined to believe the latter, but it is Lan Fan, so... it's probably just food.

Lan Fan flushes a bit, taking obvious note of the way he looks at her--and frustrated with herself at the way her mind rushed off with the concept.
